Uganda is the landlocked country whose border includes Mount Rwenzori and its highest summit, Margherita Peak.
The Rwenzori Mountains lie along Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Margherita Peak, on Mount Stanley, reaches about 5,109 metres and is the highest point in Uganda. The range is famous for glaciers, high-altitude vegetation and dramatic valleys.
The mountains were identified by some ancient geographers with the “Mountains of the Moon,” though that historical identification remains debated. Rwenzori National Park protects Uganda’s side of the range and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Rwenzori is often confused with Mount Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro, East Africa’s other famous high mountains. Margherita Peak is not the continent’s highest summit; that distinction belongs to Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro.
