Zambia is the landlocked country with Lusaka as its capital and Victoria Falls on its border with Zimbabwe.
Victoria Falls lies on the Zambezi River along the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The waterfall is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke That Thunders,” a reference to its spray and roar. Scottish explorer David Livingstone saw the falls in 1855 and named them after Queen Victoria.
Zambia occupies a central position in southern Africa and borders eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. Lusaka, in the country’s south-central region, became the capital after independence.
The falls are often associated with Zimbabwe because the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls is a major tourist base, but Zambia also contains a substantial part of the waterfall and the town of Livingstone. The Zambezi continues eastward toward Mozambique and the Indian Ocean.
