Switzerland contains Geneva, home to the European headquarters of the United Nations.
The United Nations Office at Geneva occupies the Palais des Nations, built in the 1920s and 1930s for the League of Nations. It became a major UN centre after the United Nations was founded in 1945. Geneva hosts negotiations, conferences and agencies dealing with diplomacy, health, refugees and human rights.
Switzerland is landlocked but internationally connected through its location in the Alps and its long tradition of neutrality. Geneva also hosts the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Trade Organization.
The UN’s main headquarters is in New York, so “United States” might be guessed if the question is read too broadly. Geneva is specifically the UN’s European headquarters, and Geneva is in Switzerland, not neighbouring France.
