Rwanda contains Volcanoes National Park, one of the principal homes of the endangered mountain gorilla.
The park lies in northwestern Rwanda in the Virunga Mountains, a volcanic range shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It protects five of the range’s volcanoes and is internationally known for guided gorilla trekking.
Mountain gorillas live only in the Virunga Mountains and Uganda’s Bwindi region. Rwanda’s park became especially famous through the research and conservation work associated with primatologist Dian Fossey, whose former research site is now part of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s legacy.
Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are plausible alternatives because mountain gorillas also occur there. Rwanda is correct because Volcanoes National Park, the site named in the clue, is within Rwanda’s borders.
