Czechia contains Český Krumlov, the medieval town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Český Krumlov lies in South Bohemia on a tight bend of the Vltava River. Its historic centre preserves a dense collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, while Český Krumlov Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.
The town’s castle was associated for centuries with the Vítkovci and Rožmberk families. Later owners expanded and remodelled it, leaving architectural layers from several periods. A remarkable Baroque theatre survives within the castle complex.
The country’s official short name is Czechia, although “Czech Republic” remains the formal long name. Slovakia and Austria are nearby Central European countries with historic towns, but neither contains Český Krumlov.
