Thabana Ntlenyana is in Lesotho and rises to 3,482 metres, making it the highest peak in the Drakensberg and southern Africa.
The mountain is located in the Maloti Mountains of eastern Lesotho, near the border with South Africa. Its name is commonly translated from Sesotho as “beautiful little mountain,” although the summit itself is a major high point rather than a small hill.
Lesotho’s highland terrain is shaped by basalt plateaus, steep valleys and cold mountain weather. The country is unusual geographically because it is completely surrounded by South Africa, making it an enclave as well as a landlocked state. Much of Lesotho lies at high elevation, and its capital, Maseru, is on the western lowlands.
Thabana Ntlenyana is sometimes confused with Mont-Aux-Sources, another famous Drakensberg summit associated with the watershed of major rivers. Thabana Ntlenyana is the higher peak and the correct answer for the range’s highest point.
