Prague Castle is in Czechia, overlooking the Vltava River from Prague’s Hradčany district.
The castle’s origins date to around 880, when Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty established an early fortified settlement there. Over the centuries it grew into a compound containing palaces, churches, gardens and administrative buildings rather than a single castle structure.
St. Vitus Cathedral is the complex’s most prominent landmark. Construction began in 1344, but the cathedral was not completed and consecrated until 1929. Prague Castle has also been the seat of Czech rulers and, since the establishment of the modern Czech state, the official residence and workplace of the president.
“World’s largest ancient castle complex” is a tourism description rather than a universally standardized measurement. Czechia, also called the Czech Republic, is landlocked and borders Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria.
