Which Johnny Cash album was inspired by his visit to Israel?

The story behind the answer

The Johnny Cash album inspired by his visit to Israel was The Holy Land.

Released on January 6, 1969, The Holy Land is both a concept album and a gospel record. Cash and June Carter Cash visited Israel and the West Bank, and Cash used a portable tape recorder to capture narration and sounds at Biblical sites around Jerusalem and elsewhere in the region.

Much of the album combines those on-location recordings with Cash’s descriptions of what he was seeing. Nashville overdubs and additional studio performances were later added, creating a travelogue that moves between spoken observations and gospel songs. The album’s cover shows Cash at the chapel on the Mount of Beatitudes.

The record is sometimes confused with The Gospel Road, Cash’s later 1973 soundtrack project about the life of Jesus. The Holy Land is specifically tied to Cash’s 1968 journey, and it also contains the hit “Daddy Sang Bass,” written by Carl Perkins, which topped the country chart for six weeks.
