Which J.K. Rowling screenplay introduced the magical creatures author Newt Scamander?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s screenplay Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them introduced the magical creatures author Newt Scamander. The film was released in 2016 and stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt.

The story is set in New York City in 1926, decades before Harry Potter’s time. Newt arrives with a case containing magical creatures, some of which escape and create problems in the city. The film expands the wizarding world beyond Britain and Hogwarts.

The title is shared with a 2001 charity companion book credited to Newt Scamander as a fictional author. The film is not a direct adaptation of a full earlier novel; Rowling wrote the screenplay specifically for the movie.
