Which J.K. Rowling screenplay centers on the magizoologist Newt Scamander?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s screenplay Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them centers on the magizoologist Newt Scamander.

The 2016 film follows Newt Scamander, a British wizard and magical-creature expert who arrives in New York in 1926. After several creatures escape from his magically expanded suitcase, he becomes involved in a conflict involving the Magical Congress of the United States of America and the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

Rowling wrote the screenplay, which expands the wizarding world beyond Harry Potter and takes place decades before Harry’s school years. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt in the film. The title comes from a Hogwarts textbook attributed to Newt Scamander, first mentioned in the Harry Potter books.

The film began a planned series that continued with The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018 and The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2022. Those are follow-up titles, not the first Newt Scamander film. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play and is not a Fantastic Beasts screenplay.
