Which J.K. Rowling novel won the 2001 Hugo Award for Best Novel?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire won the 2001 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

The fourth Harry Potter novel received the award at the 2001 World Science Fiction Convention, also known as Aussiecon Three, in Melbourne, Australia. It competed in the Best Novel category, which covers works of science fiction or fantasy.

Goblet of Fire expands the series beyond ordinary Hogwarts school life through the Triwizard Tournament. Harry is unexpectedly entered as a fourth champion, and the story ends with the return of Lord Voldemort and the death of Cedric Diggory.

The Hugo was an important recognition because Rowling’s books were often discussed primarily as children’s literature, even though they also belonged strongly to fantasy. The award should not be confused with the later Hugo nominations received by other books in the series.
