Which J.K. Rowling novel introduces the wizarding sport Quidditch to Harry Potter readers?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone introduces the wizarding sport Quidditch to Harry Potter readers.

The first novel explains Quidditch through Harry’s experiences at Hogwarts. The game is played between two teams of seven players, using flying broomsticks and four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. A team usually scores 10 points by sending the Quaffle through a goal hoop, while catching the Snitch earns 150 points and normally ends the match.

Harry becomes Gryffindor’s Seeker, the player responsible for pursuing the Snitch. This position gives him a central role in the school’s matches and helps establish Quidditch as an important part of the series’ culture.

The sport is often confused with real-world Muggle Quidditch, which was adapted into a non-magical competitive sport. Rowling’s fictional game itself first appears in the opening novel, although later books add more history and tournament context.
