Which J.K. Rowling novel follows Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets follows Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in J.K. Rowling’s series.

It is the second novel and was first published in the United Kingdom on 2 July 1998. Harry returns to Hogwarts for his second year, where students are attacked after the legendary Chamber of Secrets is reopened.

The story introduces or develops important elements including Tom Riddle’s diary, the basilisk, Dobby, and the history of the chamber. Harry, Ron, and Hermione investigate the attacks and discover that the mystery is connected to an earlier version of Voldemort.

The titles immediately before and after it are Philosopher’s Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban. In the United States, the first book has the alternate title Sorcerer’s Stone, but Chamber of Secrets retains the same title in both major English editions.
