Fantastic Beasts is the J.K. Rowling-created film series that begins with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The first film was released in 2016 and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1926 New York. Rowling wrote the screenplay, making it her screenwriting debut. The story is set decades before Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts and expands the wizarding world beyond Britain.

The film’s title comes from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a fictional Hogwarts textbook credited to Newt Scamander. Rowling published a real charity companion book with that title in 2001, but the film is a new narrative rather than a direct adaptation of the textbook.

The film series was planned as five installments, although only three had been released by 2022: Fantastic Beasts, The Crimes of Grindelwald, and The Secrets of Dumbledore.
