Which J.K. Rowling book was adapted into the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

The 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was based on J.K. Rowling’s book of the same title.

The book was first presented as a Hogwarts textbook written by the fictional magizoologist Newt Scamander. Rowling published the real companion book in 2001, with proceeds supporting Comic Relief. It is formatted as a humorous reference work listing magical creatures rather than as a conventional narrative novel.

For the film, Rowling wrote an original screenplay rather than adapting a full adventure story from the textbook. The movie follows Newt Scamander in 1926 New York and expands the Wizarding World decades before Harry Potter’s school years.

The title can cause confusion because the book and film share the same name but have very different formats. The book is a short fictional reference guide, while the film is a feature-length prequel-era adventure that launched a separate film series.
