Which J.K. Rowling book is presented as a Hogwarts textbook by Newt Scamander?

The story behind the answer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is presented as a Hogwarts textbook by Newt Scamander.

The book was published in 2001 as a companion to the Harry Potter series. Its fictional author, Newt Scamander, is a magizoologist who writes about magical creatures. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are listed as having owned and annotated the Hogwarts copy, giving the slim reference book an in-world connection to the novels.

Rowling wrote the text as a reproduction of that fictional textbook rather than as a conventional narrative. The proceeds from the original charity edition supported Comic Relief, alongside the companion volume Quidditch Through the Ages.

The title later became the basis for a film series. That adaptation expanded Newt Scamander from a name on a textbook cover into the central character of a story set decades before Harry’s time. The book and films therefore share a title and character, but they are different kinds of works.
