Japanese girl group AKB48 released the 2010 hit single “Heavy Rotation.”
The song was issued on August 18, 2010, as AKB48’s 17th major-label single. It became one of the group’s signature recordings and was especially influential in Japan because of its memorable chorus, large ensemble presentation and widely recognized music video.
“Heavy Rotation” was performed by selected AKB48 members rather than every member of the broader AKB48 system. The title track was led by member Yuka Oshima, who won the group’s annual popularity election that year. The song is sometimes mixed up with releases by sister groups such as SKE48, but it is an AKB48 recording. AKB48’s model combined rotating performers, theater appearances and fan voting, helping make the group one of Japan’s most commercially prominent pop acts.
