Bananarama holds the Guinness World Record for the most chart entries by an all-female group.
The London trio formed in 1979 when childhood friends Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward met Siobhan Fahey. Their early music combined pop with post-punk and led to a recording contract with Demon Records. Their first single, “Aie a Mwana,” appeared in 1981.
Bananarama became internationally known through songs including “Cruel Summer,” “Venus,” “Love in the First Degree” and “I Heard a Rumour.” “Venus” reached number one in the United States in 1986 after the group recorded a Hi-NRG-influenced version.
The Guinness recognition concerns chart entries, not the number of number-one singles or album sales. That distinction matters because Bananarama’s long career produced many singles across several decades, while other groups may have achieved more major hits in a shorter period. The trio has also undergone lineup changes, with Fahey leaving in 1988 and later returning for selected work.
