Destiny’s Child released “Independent Women Part I,” the theme song of the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels.
The song was written and produced by Sam Barnes, Jean-Claude Olivier and Cory Rooney, with additional writing by Beyoncé Knowles, Rodney Jerkins and others. It was recorded for the film’s soundtrack and later included on Destiny’s Child’s third studio album, Survivor.
The single became one of Destiny’s Child’s biggest commercial successes, spending eleven weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its message of financial and personal independence fit the film’s action-oriented image and helped establish the group’s early-2000s sound. The title is often shortened to “Independent Women,” but “Part I” is the official title of the hit single.
