Which international literary award did J.K. Rowling win in 2010?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling won the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2010.

The Danish award was presented to Rowling in Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, in October 2010. It recognizes an author whose work is considered to have made an important contribution to children’s literature. Rowling received the prize for her achievement as the creator of the Harry Potter books.

The award is distinct from the biennial Hans Christian Andersen Awards administered by the International Board on Books for Young People. Those awards honour an author or illustrator for a lasting contribution to children’s literature, while the Danish literature award is named for Andersen and has its own selection process.

Rowling’s 2010 honour followed many other distinctions, including the British Book Awards’ Children’s Book of the Year recognition and the Order of the British Empire appointment she received in 2001. It should not be confused with the Nobel Prize in Literature, which Rowling has never won.
