Which indie rock duo's 2003 album 'Elephant' won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album?

The story behind the answer

The White Stripes’ 2003 album “Elephant” won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The Detroit-based duo consisted of guitarist and vocalist Jack White and drummer Meg White.

“Elephant” was the band’s fourth studio album and was released in April 2003. Most of it was recorded in roughly two weeks at Toe Rag Studios in London, using a deliberately raw, back-to-basics approach. Jack White produced the album, which expanded the duo’s garage-blues sound with keyboards, piano, and heavily processed guitar tones.

The album’s biggest song was “Seven Nation Army,” whose instantly recognizable riff became a stadium chant and one of rock’s most familiar musical hooks. “Elephant” also produced “The Hardest Button to Button” and “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself.”

At the 2004 Grammy Awards, the album won Best Alternative Music Album, while “Seven Nation Army” won Best Rock Song. It was nominated for Album of the Year but did not win that category.
