Which indie rock band released the 1988 double album 'Daydream Nation'?
Answer
Sonic Youth
Answer
Sonic Youth
The indie rock band that released the 1988 double album Daydream Nation was Sonic Youth.
Released on October 18, 1988, Daydream Nation was Sonic Youth's fifth studio album. The New York band recorded it during July and August at Greene St. Recording in Manhattan, then issued it through Enigma Records. Its 70-minute-plus length allowed the group to expand its mix of noise rock, art punk, avant-rock and indie rock.
The album grew out of Sonic Youth's increasingly adventurous 1980s work, including EVOL and Sister. It paired long, feedback-heavy passages with more direct melodies, a contrast heard immediately in “Teen Age Riot.” Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley shaped the record's distinctive combination of alternate tunings, prepared guitars and propulsive drumming.
Listeners sometimes confuse the album with later grunge touchstones because it influenced alternative rock broadly. It predates the band's move to major-label DGC Records, however, and was their only release on Enigma. Its critical success helped secure that major-label deal.
