Slint recorded the 1991 album Spiderland, which includes “Good Morning, Captain,” in just four days.
Spiderland was Slint’s second and final studio album, released by Touch and Go Records on March 27, 1991. The Louisville, Kentucky, band recorded it at River North Studios in Chicago during August 1990, with Brian Paulson serving as engineer.
The album’s six songs were extensively developed and rehearsed before the sessions, but the lyrics were written in the studio. “Good Morning, Captain” closes the record and is among its most widely recognized tracks, building from sparse guitar lines into an intense vocal climax.
A common mix-up is confusing Slint with other influential 1990s underground rock bands such as Shellac or Polvo. Slint’s debut album was Tweez, recorded with Steve Albini, while Spiderland marked a distinct shift toward the tense, spacious sound later associated with post-rock.
