Answer
Neutral Milk Hotel
Answer
Neutral Milk Hotel
Neutral Milk Hotel released the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Released by Merge Records on February 10, 1998, it was the American band’s second and final studio album. The record was led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jeff Mangum, with production by Robert Schneider, and was recorded from July through September 1997 in Denver.
Its distinctive sound combines indie rock, psychedelic folk, and lo-fi recording techniques. Alongside guitars and drums, the arrangements feature unusual instruments such as singing saw, uilleann pipes, accordion, and brass. Schneider created much of the album’s distortion through heavy compression rather than conventional guitar effects, helping produce its dense, rough-edged character.
The album initially sold modestly but gradually developed a major cult following, especially after Neutral Milk Hotel’s intense live tours. Its surreal lyrics are often discussed in connection with Anne Frank and The Diary of a Young Girl, although the songs remain deliberately opaque. Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, and The Mountain Goats are all associated with indie music, but none released this album.
