Which indie rock band released the 2002 album 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots'?

The story behind the answer

The indie rock band that released the 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is The Flaming Lips.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots was The Flaming Lips’ tenth studio album, released by Warner Bros. Records on July 16, 2002. The Oklahoma band—fronted by Wayne Coyne—had already built a reputation for adventurous psychedelic rock, but this record pushed further into electronic textures, programmed rhythms, and pop-oriented songwriting.

The album’s title character was inspired by Yoshimi P-We, a Japanese musician associated with the Boredoms and OOIOO. The Flaming Lips’ lyrics explore love, mortality, artificial emotion, pacifism, and deception through vivid science-fiction imagery.

Although the album is often described as a concept album, Coyne has said it was not intended to tell one continuous story; the narrative is most apparent across the opening tracks. Another common mix-up is associating the album only with its title track. It also includes “Do You Realize??” and “Fight Test,” among the band’s best-known songs.
