The indie rock band that released the 1992 album “Slanted and Enchanted” was Pavement.
Pavement formed in Stockton, California, around Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg. The album was released by Matador Records on April 20, 1992, and became the band’s debut full-length record. Its loose, distorted sound helped establish Pavement as one of the defining American indie bands of the 1990s.
The album was recorded on a tight budget, including sessions at drummer Gary Young’s home studio. Young is the only drummer to appear on a Pavement album, making this record distinct within the band’s catalog. The songs combine fuzzy guitars, unconventional structures, and catchy melodies beneath deliberately rough production.
A common mix-up is confusing it with later Pavement albums such as “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain” or “Wowee Zowee.” “Slanted and Enchanted” came first and includes the early single “Summer Babe.”
