J.K. Rowling received the honor of OBE when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
She was appointed OBE in the 2001 Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to children’s literature. The Order of the British Empire has several ranks, and OBE stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. It is above MBE and below CBE in the order’s usual hierarchy.
Rowling’s appointment followed the international success of the Harry Potter novels, but the honor recognized her contribution to literature rather than simply a single sales milestone. She later received other distinctions, including the Companion of Honour in 2017.
The titles can be confused because “OBE” is sometimes used loosely for the whole order. Rowling was specifically appointed an Officer, not a Member or Commander. Her OBE also should not be confused with honorary degrees and other awards she received from universities and literary organizations.
