J.K. Rowling has identified Hufflepuff as her favorite Hogwarts house. Hufflepuff is one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter books.
The house was founded by Helga Hufflepuff and is associated with qualities including hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Its students are represented by the badger, and the house colours are yellow and black.
Many readers assume Rowling might prefer Gryffindor because Harry, Ron, and Hermione belong there, or Ravenclaw because of the author’s literary reputation. Those are understandable associations, but her stated preference is Hufflepuff. The question concerns Rowling’s preference, not the house assigned to Harry or the house most central to the plot.
Hufflepuff becomes especially prominent through characters such as Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks, although the books present members of every house as individuals rather than simple stereotypes.
