Which Hogwarts house is founded by Salazar Slytherin in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

Salazar Slytherin founded Slytherin house in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Slytherin is one of the four Hogwarts houses, alongside Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Its founder, Salazar Slytherin, was one of the medieval witches and wizards who established Hogwarts. The house is traditionally associated with ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and determination.

Slytherin’s emblematic animal is the serpent, and its colors are green and silver. The house common room is located in the dungeons beneath Hogwarts. Harry Potter’s rival Draco Malfoy is a Slytherin, as are many members of the Malfoy family.

The house is not presented as inherently evil, although several major antagonists belong to it. Rowling’s story also includes sympathetic Slytherins, especially Horace Slughorn and Severus Snape, whose actions complicate the house’s reputation.
