Which Hogwarts founder created the house later named Gryffindor in J.K. Rowling’s books?

The story behind the answer

Godric Gryffindor created the Hogwarts house later named Gryffindor in J.K. Rowling’s books.

Gryffindor was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The other founders were Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw. Each founder established a house reflecting qualities they valued in students.

Gryffindor is associated chiefly with bravery, courage, nerve, and chivalry. Its emblem is a lion, and its house colours are scarlet and gold. The house’s students traditionally live in a tower within Hogwarts castle, though the books do not present every architectural detail in the same way as later adaptations.

Godric Gryffindor is also associated with the Sword of Gryffindor, an enchanted weapon that can appear to a true Gryffindor in need. The sword becomes important during the series’ final conflict with Voldemort.
