Which Hogwarts founder created the Chamber of Secrets in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world?

The story behind the answer

Salazar Slytherin created the Chamber of Secrets in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world.

The chamber is a hidden room beneath Hogwarts that Slytherin constructed before leaving the school. According to the legend, he placed a monster inside it and intended the chamber to be opened by his true heir.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the creature is revealed to be a basilisk. Tom Riddle, who later becomes Lord Voldemort, opens the chamber through his connection to Slytherin and uses the basilisk to attack students.

The chamber is associated with Slytherin House, but it is not the house common room. That distinction is a frequent source of confusion. Slytherin’s belief that Hogwarts should admit only students from wizarding families also drives the conflict surrounding the chamber.
