Which Himalayan summit is the highest mountain in Bhutan?

The story behind the answer

Gangkhar Puensum is the highest mountain in Bhutan, reaching approximately 7,570 metres.

The mountain lies on or near Bhutan’s northern border with Tibet, and its exact elevation and frontier position have been debated because surveying the remote region is difficult. Its name is commonly translated as “White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers.”

Gangkhar Puensum is famous for remaining unclimbed. Bhutan restricted mountaineering on peaks above 6,000 metres in 1994 because of spiritual beliefs, and the country later prohibited mountaineering altogether. It should not be confused with Jomolhari, another celebrated Bhutanese peak that is lower and has been climbed.
