Which Himalayan peak was first climbed in winter in 1985?
Answer
Cho Oyu
Answer
Cho Oyu
Cho Oyu was the first Himalayan 8,000-metre peak climbed in winter, in 1985.
The successful expedition reached the summit on 12 February 1985. Polish climbers Maciej Berbeka and Maciej Pawlikowski made the first ascent, while Polish climbers Andrzej Heinrich and Jerzy Kukuczka reached the summit two days later by the same expedition.
Cho Oyu rises to 8,188 metres and stands on the China–Nepal border west of Mount Everest. Climbers often describe its normal route as comparatively accessible for an 8,000-metre mountain, although altitude, storms, avalanche danger, and technical terrain remain serious hazards.
The winter achievement is distinct from Cho Oyu’s first ascent, which occurred in 1954. A winter ascent means the climb took place during the meteorological winter period, not merely during a cold-season expedition.
