Which Himalayan peak is the highest point of the Garhwal Himalaya?
Answer
Nanda Devi
Answer
Nanda Devi
Nanda Devi is the highest peak of the Garhwal Himalaya.
Rising to 7,816 metres, Nanda Devi is India’s second-highest mountain overall, after Kangchenjunga, and the highest peak located entirely within India. It stands in Uttarakhand and forms part of a dramatic ring of peaks surrounding the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
The mountain has long held religious importance in the region. Nanda is associated with a Himalayan goddess and is revered in Uttarakhand, where the Nanda Devi Raj Jat pilgrimage is held periodically.
British climbers made the first successful ascent in 1936, when Bill Tilman and Noel Odell reached the summit. The inner sanctuary was later closed to climbing for conservation reasons. Nanda Devi National Park and nearby Valley of Flowers form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
