Which Himalayan national park surrounds Mount Everest on Nepal’s side?
Answer
Sagarmatha National Park
Answer
Sagarmatha National Park
Sagarmatha National Park surrounds Mount Everest on Nepal’s side of the Himalayas.
Established in 1976, the park covers 1,148 square kilometres in Solukhumbu District. Its name comes from “Sagarmatha,” the Nepali name commonly used for Everest. The landscape rises from forested valleys to glaciers and high rocky peaks.
The park includes famous settlements such as Namche Bazaar and the main Nepalese trekking route toward Everest Base Camp. It is also home to Sherpa communities, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan monal, and the snow leopard.
A common mix-up is confusing the park with Qomolangma National Nature Reserve in Tibet, which protects Everest’s northern side. Sagarmatha National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
