Which Himalayan mountain was the first 8,000-metre peak climbed, in 1950?
Answer
Annapurna I
Answer
Annapurna I
Annapurna I was the first 8,000-metre peak climbed, in 1950.
French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached its summit on 3 June 1950. Their expedition made Annapurna the first of the fourteen officially recognized mountains higher than 8,000 metres to be climbed successfully.
The ascent was a landmark in mountaineering, but the descent was extremely difficult. Herzog suffered severe frostbite, and both he and Lachenal sustained serious injuries. Herzog’s later book, Annapurna, helped make the expedition internationally famous.
Annapurna I is in north-central Nepal and reaches 8,091 metres. Despite being lower than Everest, it has historically been considered one of the most dangerous eight-thousanders because of avalanches, steep terrain and difficult weather.
