Pokhara is Nepal’s second-largest city by population and a major Himalayan tourism centre.
The city lies in central Nepal beside Phewa Lake, with the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges visible from nearby hills on clear days. Its location makes it a principal starting point for treks into the Annapurna region and a popular base for visits to mountain villages, lakes and viewpoints.
Pokhara is also an important aviation and transport hub. Pokhara International Airport began commercial operations in 2023, complementing the older domestic airport. The city’s economy combines tourism, education, services and trade, while its lakeside district is one of Nepal’s best-known visitor areas.
Kathmandu remains Nepal’s largest city and capital. Pokhara should not be confused with Lalitpur, Bharatpur or Biratnagar, which are also major Nepalese urban centres but occupy different positions in population rankings.
