Which Harry Potter house did J.K. Rowling say she would have belonged to?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling said she would have belonged to Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

Gryffindor is one of the four Hogwarts houses in the Harry Potter books. It is associated with courage, bravery, nerve and chivalry, and its founder is Godric Gryffindor. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are the series’ best-known Gryffindor students.

Rowling has identified herself with Gryffindor in discussions of the Hogwarts houses. This is an author’s personal answer rather than a fictional sorting scene in the novels: Rowling is not a character who attends Hogwarts as a student.

The four houses are often reduced to simple personality labels, but the books show that their members are varied. The Sorting Hat considers a student’s qualities and choices, and several characters demonstrate traits associated with more than one house.
