Which Harry Potter film was the final movie in the main series based on J.K. Rowling’s novels?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was the final movie in the main Harry Potter film series.

Released in 2011, the film adapts the second half of J.K. Rowling’s seventh novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. David Yates directed it, and Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson returned as Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

The preceding film, Deathly Hallows – Part 1, was released in 2010 and adapts the first half of the same novel. Dividing the final book into two films allowed the production to include more of the concluding plot than a single conventional-length adaptation might have allowed.

Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the eighth film in the main series, even though the novels number seven. It is separate from the later Fantastic Beasts films, which are set earlier in the wizarding world and focus on Newt Scamander.
