Which Harry Potter character is the godfather of Harry Potter?

Sirius Black is Harry Potter’s godfather.

Sirius was the closest friend of Harry’s father, James Potter, during their time at Hogwarts. He became Harry’s godfather before Harry was born. After Voldemort attacked the Potter family, Sirius was falsely believed to have betrayed them and was imprisoned in Azkaban without a trial.

His true role becomes important in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The book reveals that Peter Pettigrew, rather than Sirius, was the traitor who disclosed the Potters’ location to Voldemort. Sirius later escapes and attempts to protect Harry.

Sirius is an Animagus who can transform into a large black dog. Remus Lupin was another friend of James, but he is Harry’s former professor, not his godfather. James Potter is Harry’s father, so he cannot fill that role.
