Which Harry Potter book was the first to be published in the United States under a changed title?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the United States title for the first Harry Potter book.

In the United Kingdom and many other markets, the book was published as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Scholastic, the American publisher, changed “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” for the US edition before publication in 1998.

The change was made because the publisher believed that “sorcerer” would be clearer and more appealing to American children. The plot, characters, and author were unchanged; only the title and some related wording in the American edition differed.

Readers sometimes treat the two titles as separate books. They are the same first novel, and the alternate title is one reason bibliographies may appear to list eight Harry Potter titles when there are only seven main stories.
