Which Harry Potter book was the first in the series to be published under J.K. Rowling’s name in 1997?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the first Harry Potter book published under J.K. Rowling’s name in 1997.

Bloomsbury published the novel in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It begins with Harry living with the Dursley family before learning that he is a wizard and entering the hidden magical world. The story introduces the series’ major characters, including Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort.

The book’s title was changed for its United States edition, where it appeared as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The plot is the same, but some wording and vocabulary were adjusted for American readers.

The title can be confused with the second novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which followed in 1998. The first book’s publication launched one of the most commercially successful children’s literature series in modern publishing.
