Which Harry Potter book was adapted into the 2004 film directed by Alfonso Cuarón?

The story behind the answer

Alfonso Cuarón’s 2004 Harry Potter film adapted Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The film is the third movie in the Harry Potter series and is based on Rowling’s third novel, published in 1999. Its story introduces Sirius Black, a prisoner who has escaped from Azkaban, and develops the importance of Remus Lupin, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Cuarón directed the film after Chris Columbus directed the first two installments. His visual style and darker treatment helped distinguish the third movie from its predecessors. The main cast remained Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, who played Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

The Prisoner of Azkaban is often remembered for its time-travel sequence involving the Time-Turner. It is not the Goblet of Fire film, which followed in 2005 under director Mike Newell. Matching the director to the correct installment is a useful way to separate the four filmmakers involved in the main series.
