J.K. Rowling wrote The Tales of Beedle the Bard as a charity auction manuscript.

In 2007, Rowling produced seven handwritten and illustrated copies of the collection. Six were given to people closely connected with the Harry Potter books, while one was auctioned by Sotheby’s to raise money for charity. Amazon bought the auctioned copy for £1.95 million.

The collection is presented as a wizarding book of fairy tales. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Albus Dumbledore leaves Hermione Granger a copy, and the story “The Tale of the Three Brothers” becomes particularly important to the plot.

A commercial edition was published in December 2008, with proceeds benefiting Children’s High Level Group, the organization later known as Lumos. The manuscript therefore connects Rowling’s fiction, bookmaking, and charitable work.
