Which Harry Potter book did J.K. Rowling complete at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling completed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel.

The seventh and final Harry Potter novel was completed in January 2007 at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. Rowling stayed in Room 552, which was later renamed the J.K. Rowling Suite. She signed a marble bust in the room, recording that she finished the book there on 11 January 2007.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published on 21 July 2007. It concludes the central conflict with Lord Voldemort and follows Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger after they leave Hogwarts to search for Horcruxes. The novel became one of the fastest-selling books ever recorded at the time.

The hotel detail is sometimes confused with The Elephant House, another Edinburgh location associated with Rowling. The Elephant House is connected mainly with early writing, while the Balmoral marks the completion of the final book. Rowling’s statement concerns finishing the manuscript, not writing every chapter in that hotel room.
