Which Harry Potter book by J.K. Rowling was published first in the United States under a different title?
Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the first J.K. Rowling book published in the United States under a different title.
The American edition was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Scholastic changed the title because editors believed “sorcerer” would be more immediately understandable and appealing to American readers than “philosopher.” The book appeared in the United States in 1998, after the British edition had launched the series in 1997.
The plot, characters, and author were unchanged. The difference is primarily associated with the title and some wording choices between British and American editions. For example, British “trainers” became American “sneakers” in places.
Later books generally kept their British titles in the United States. This makes the first installment the notable title exception in the core series. The two names can also lead readers to think they are different books, but they are editions of the same novel.
