Which ground traditionally hosts the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne?

The story behind the answer

The Melbourne Cricket Ground hosts the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne.

The MCG, commonly called the “G”, has been Australian rules football’s most famous major venue for more than a century. Its enormous capacity and central role in Victorian sport made it the traditional home of the VFL and later AFL premiership deciders.

The Grand Final has occasionally been played elsewhere. The 1991 decider was held at Waverley Park, while pandemic restrictions moved the 2020 Grand Final to Brisbane’s Gabba and the 2021 match to Perth Stadium. These were exceptional arrangements rather than a permanent change.

The MCG also hosted the 1956 Olympic Games athletics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Its football history is closely linked with the Melbourne Cricket Club and the development of organised Australian rules football.
