Which ground has hosted the most VFL/AFL Grand Finals?
Answer
Melbourne Cricket Ground
Answer
Melbourne Cricket Ground
The Melbourne Cricket Ground has hosted the most VFL/AFL Grand Finals.
The MCG, in Melbourne’s Yarra Park, has been the traditional home of the competition’s premiership decider and is widely known as the spiritual home of Australian rules football. Its very large capacity makes it suitable for the AFL’s biggest annual match and allows tens of thousands of supporters to attend.
The ground’s grand-final history is not completely uninterrupted. The 1991 Grand Final was played at Waverley Park, and the 2020 and 2021 deciders were moved outside Melbourne because of conditions affecting the competition. The 2020 match was held at Brisbane’s Gabba, while the 2021 match was held at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Those exceptions do not change the MCG’s overall record. The venue also hosts the annual Boxing Day Test and major events, but its association with the AFL Grand Final is its most prominent football tradition.
