Which Greek cave contains an important Neolithic site in Thessaly?
Answer
Theopetra Cave
Answer
Theopetra Cave
The Greek cave containing an important Neolithic site in Thessaly is Theopetra Cave.
Theopetra lies near the village of Theopetra, about 3 kilometres south of Kalambaka in central Greece. Excavations began in 1987 and revealed an unusually long archaeological sequence, including Middle and Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic layers.
Its importance is that one location preserves evidence of major changes in human life: from hunter-gathering to farming, and across the transition from the Pleistocene to the Holocene. Finds include stone tools, pottery, animal remains, plant evidence, ornaments, and human burials.
Theopetra is sometimes confused with the Dikteon Cave of Crete, which is associated with ancient mythology and the worship of Zeus. Theopetra’s fame instead rests primarily on its archaeological record; researchers have also reported a prehistoric stone wall at the entrance and human presence extending tens of thousands of years.
