Which girl group released the 1981 album Beauty and the Beat?

The story behind the answer

The Go-Go’s released the 1981 album Beauty and the Beat.

Issued on July 8, 1981, the album was the American band’s debut studio record. It blended punk energy with polished new-wave and pop songwriting, helping bring an all-female band to the top of the mainstream album market.

Beauty and the Beat reached number one on the Billboard 200 and remained there for six weeks. Its best-known singles included “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat,” both of which became enduring songs of the early 1980s.

The record is often described as a landmark because The Go-Go’s wrote and performed their own material while moving from the Los Angeles punk scene into international pop success. It should not be confused with The Bangles’ debut album All Over the Place, released in 1984. The Go-Go’s later received recognition in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
